On-Page Chat

The chat areas of most media sites share a closer resemblance to singles party lines that are advertised late night on television, than to an actual conversation.

Actual conversations are often stumbled upon and organic...rarely does anyone schedule to chat or relegate themselves to on particular area to talk.

Chat should be built into and around every section on a media's site. It could go on within a window in a sidebar or along the bottom of the screen. The goal is to allow readers to pass by and overhear a conversation. Of course, the ability to turn of the chat (automatically off for a child), ignore a user, and launch the chat in a new window, etc would be built into the system. However, media sites need to move away from the idea that using their sites is a lonely/solitary activity.
