Semantic Conversion of Print Stories

The point when a story makes the transition from print to online is the moment that its semantic structure needs to be solidified. Right now the transition is made with primarily presentational considerations (bold, italic, image sizes, etc). The transition also needs to be made with semantic considerations.

For the most part a machine can do both of these jobs, but it needs to be double-checked. A technical designer can do one side of the doublechecking, with a librarian doing the other side.

Semantic coding would allow any application to keep track of who was cited in the story, what sites it links to, what neighborhoods that were mentioned, what businesses are mentioned, what large scale themes it matches, etc. The technology would have to be built similar to a search engine, but with a matching algorithm to seperate the wheat from the chaff before presenting it to someone to doublecheck.
